Getting started

Open SafeOpen and point your camera at any QR code. The app decodes it immediately. You will see the payload type, destination, and a risk assessment before deciding what to do with it.
Tap the Inspect tab and paste your link. You can also share a link from Safari, Messages, or any other app by tapping the share icon and selecting SafeOpen.
It classifies the payload (URL, Wi-Fi, contact, calendar, plain text, and more), normalizes the URL if applicable, runs local risk heuristics, and shows you a plain-language explanation of what the payload is and what opening it would do. None of this requires the network or any credits.

Scan credits

Scan credits pay for the two server-side features: AI Summary and Open Safely. Each one consumes 1 credit per use. The free, on-device features (scanning, decoding, risk scoring, history, tracking-parameter stripping) never consume credits. Every install starts with 10 free credits, and we add 10 more every 30 days at no charge.
Open the Account tab and tap Buy Credits. Three consumable packs are available: Starter ($0.99 for 100 credits), Standard ($2.99 for 500 credits), and Power ($9.99 for 2,500 credits). Credits never expire. There is no subscription.
If a credit pack purchase succeeds at Apple but doesn’t reach your balance (network drop, our backend down, etc.), open Account → Restore Purchases. SafeOpen will replay every consumable transaction Apple knows about and re-grant the credits. Each transaction can only be redeemed once, so it is safe to tap repeatedly.
Yes, through Apple. All purchases are processed by Apple, so refund requests must be submitted at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue refunds directly because we never see your payment method or any financial information. If Apple refunds a pack you have already partially spent, the refunded credits will be removed from your balance; if you have already spent all of them, your balance is set to zero and you owe us nothing.
Your credit balance is tied to an anonymous device UUID stored in your Keychain. Deleting and reinstalling the app generates a new UUID and resets your balance to a fresh 10 welcome credits. Restore Purchases on the new install will replay any prior credit pack purchases Apple has on file and re-grant those credits, but the free welcome and monthly refill credits do not carry over.
Not today. Each device gets its own anonymous UUID and its own credit balance. We have no account system, so credits don’t sync. If you mostly use one device, install there. If you need cross-device, watch for a future update.

AI Summary and Open Safely

Our servers fetch the destination page through a Katafract relay node (so the destination never sees your IP), then send the page text to OpenAI’s API to generate a plain-English summary of what the link contains. The summary comes back to your device. It costs 1 credit.
It opens the link in an isolated, non-persistent in-app browser served from one of our relay nodes. The destination sees the relay’s IP, not your device’s. The session destroys all cookies and storage when you close it or after 10 minutes, whichever comes first. It costs 1 credit.
No. SafeOpen routes only the link inspection traffic for AI Summary and Open Safely through our infrastructure. Your normal Safari browsing, app traffic, and everything else still uses your phone’s normal network. If you want a real VPN that covers your whole device, look at Enclave.

Risk scoring

SafeOpen uses four levels: Likely Safe (standard URL, no flags), Use Caution (short URL, unusual parameters, or patterns worth noting), High Risk (raw IP, punycode spoofing, suspicious port, or known risky patterns), and Unknown (non-URL payload or insufficient data to score).
SafeOpen uses deterministic local heuristics that flag structural patterns, not reputation databases. A short URL from a trusted service, for example, will always show Use Caution because short URLs obscure the destination by design. The explanation tells you exactly why it scored that way so you can make an informed call.
Yes. SafeOpen shows you the information but never blocks you. Tap Open at any risk level and the app hands off to the appropriate system handler (your browser for URLs, the Contacts app for vCards, and so on).

Privacy and data

No. SafeOpen has no accounts, no sign-in, and no registration. Your credit balance is keyed to an anonymous UUID stored in your device’s Keychain.
Only what AI Summary and Open Safely need: the URL you submitted, your anonymous device UUID, and a region hint. URLs are written to an audit table and automatically deleted after 30 days. The audit row is not linked to your Apple ID or any other identity. Full disclosure on the SafeOpen Privacy Policy.
On your device only. It is never synced to iCloud, never uploaded, and never shared. Deleting the app deletes the history.
No. There are no analytics frameworks, no advertising SDKs, and no crash reporters. We do not sell or share data with anyone for any purpose.
